No New Clothes
What’s the longest you’ve ever gone without buying or thrifting new clothes? I’m finding myself in a weird 10-week stretch of not buying any for myself! How did this happen?!
It started at the end of February when I opted to have bunion surgery to relieve awful foot pain. While on bed rest, I scrolled listlessly on ThredUp but never felt the urge to hit “add to cart.” Instead, my focus was on finding footwear I could wear post-op, and all my efforts went into that search.
After many, many online shoe returns, I got an offer to visit a real shoe store and was able to purchase a pair of sensible (and comfortable!) Brooks sneakers. I knew I had to love them because they’d be the only shoes I would be able to wear for about six months.
So this is where my clothing no-buy started. It’s not something I set out to do, but it feels right during this season of life. (Don’t worry, I’m still thrifting hard in other categories!)
As time has gone on, I’ve realized I literally have one pair of shoes, and everything has to match them. So rather than keep acquiring new clothes, I decided to take on a new style challenge and see what I can do in my closet with just this one pair of white sneakers. They don’t call me The Outfit Repeater for nothing.
Let’s take a look at my current outfits styled around my Brooks sneakers!
Outfits On Repeat
Not only are my Brooks sneakers getting repeated wear, but so is my totally customized walking cane!
I’ve had my cane for the past four years to manage dysautonomia symptoms, but now it’s become my full-time companion as I learn to walk again. I love matching my outfits to it, but if I can’t do that, it still adds whimsy to even an ordinary look.
Sneaking Into My Heart
Long time blog readers will know that white sneakers are totally out of the ordinary for me—unless I’m dressing up as workout guru Richard Simmons for Halloween! I’m much more of a ballet flats girlie.
But now, since my bunion surgery and subsequent shoe search, I’ve had to change strategies as I can’t go back to my old footwear, both figuratively and literally. Apparently, the shoe size I’ve always known has been wrong. My feet are actually bigger, according to my doctor!
I’ve had to donate all of my shoes, save for a few pairs of sturdy sandals, and I’m starting over. As soon as I’m cleared for more options, I have my eye on a pair of structured ballet flats that will fit in with my new life and be a better fit for my personal style.
In Clothes-ing
If you’re a sneaker head, how am I doing with my outfits? Is there anything I should try styling these with next? I’d love to hear from you in the comments!
