  • My Sister Styles an Outfit For Me

sister styles an outfit for me hannah rupp the outfit repeater thrifted lace skirt

If anybody asks, my sister made me wear this!

    Sister Act

There’s a time honored tradition on my blog where a family member gets to style my outfit. First it was my mom, then it was my brother, and now you get to see what my older sister thinks I should wear!

My sister and I are closest in age than any of my siblings (just 3 years different) and thus the best of friends.ย Our styles growing up were starkly different as demonstrated by how we dressed our Barbies but only got more distinct from there. She dresses in a very matchy-matchy way while I’m a mismatched type of person.

Nowadays we tend to wear similar pieces but hardly in the same manner. For the purpose of this post, I asked her what’d she pair with my newly thrifted beige skirt and this is what she came up with!

    Style Swap

My sister wasn’t overly thrilled having to create an outfit for me because my closet overwhelmed her. (It’s either because she’s 5’0″ or because I have a lot of clothes.๐Ÿ˜‚)

Her put-together style lead her to create a very neat look with coordinating pieces that match to the closest detail.ย The pink of the earrings matches the skirt, as do the gold tones seen in my shoes & accessories. Even the bruise on my right knee went perfectly with my purse!

    Family Fun

I think this outfit is very pretty, if not exactly something I’d wear everyday. I almost forgot I had this lace shirt so I’m glad she found it and put it to good use!

How’d my sister do? Are any of your envying her creation or should she stick to being a behind-the-scenes supporter of my blog? Tell me your thoughts in the comments!

  • How I Took Outfit Inspiration From An Unusual ’80s Movie

hannah rupp the outfit repeater cyndi lauper jeff goldblum vibes movie outfit inspired

I predict you’re going to love this outfit post.

    Good Vibes

Cyndi Lauper was my first (and forever) ’80s icon and her style is none more perfect than in the 1988 comedyย Vibes. In it she plays a beautician with psychic abilities and gets dragged into a mysterious exploration inย the mountains of Ecuador with Jeff Goldblum.

In honor of the movie turning 30 years old this month, I came up with a look to pay tribute to Cyndi’s character Sylvia and all the weird, wacky, and wonderful clothes she wears.

    Envisioning The Perfect Outfit

My vision for this outfit was something loosely inspired by the movie but with my own spin on it. Cyndi sports a lot of statement denim in the movie so wearing a jean jacket was a no-brainer. To dress things up, I went with a sequin slip dress that’s similar to one Cyndi wore at a fancy party.

Surprisingly, the only vintage I’m wearing is my newly thrifted white purse!

    Beย Adventurous With Your Style

I may not have run off with Jeff Goldblum to solve a mystery in Ecuador, but I did try to be adventurous with my style choices.ย The juxtaposition of a dressy & casual piece is so unusual and I love it!

    Good Vibes

I can’t recommend Vibes enough if you’re looking for a cult classic comedy to chill with on a Saturday night. It’s the perfect amount of cheap laughs, 1980s fashion, and Jeff Goldblum’s face.

But don’t be like me and spend 4 years trying to thrift it on VHS. Just buy the DVD on Amazon and enjoy!

  • Red, White, and True Blue Personal Style

    Style Search

Not many people would find a vintage blue jumpsuit hanging in a thrift store basement very appealing, but I do. Why?

That question got my mind hopping down a rabbit trail of where style even comes from and why we choose the clothes that we do. Read on for more of my thoughts on picking a personal style and if it’s even very personal at all!

    True Blue

My earliest clothing influences were found in the pages of magazines. Models, celebrities, and real girls with street style in Seventeen and Teen Vogue greatly appealed to me. Their attitudes seemed cool and I figured it had to do with what they were wearing, which I would later find to be half true.

I had fun emulating their styles with clothes I found at the thrift stores (some things never change!) but still didn’t feel like I was dressing life myself.

Towards the end of my high school education in 2009, fashion blogs were popping up all over the place and I wanted to join in and share my thrifty outfits. It wasn’t until I took that conscious step to document and explore my clothing choices, that I started to discover my personal style.

    Out Of The Blue

My style has come together through lots of trial and error. I’ve learned along the way what I like and dislike to wear, fashion hacks for getting dressed faster, and savvy shopping strategies to get exactly what I want.

But haven’t I just become a product of my influences? Sort of. The way I see it, I’m still the one consciously choosing to wear these things in public so yes, style is still personal.

Clothes are a way to express yourself andย speak before we even have a chance to say anything! Some people might not like what I have to “say” but TOUGH! If they don’t like it, they should be glad they’re not the ones wearing a vintage jumpsuit with bright red lipstick.ย ๐Ÿ˜‰

    Jump To It

I’m not saying you have to start a blog to find your personal style but you do have to make an effort to find it. It’s not just going to surprise you one day while you’re shopping at a department store!

You can take action to find what inspires you by reading a magazine, catching up with friends, watching t.v., scrolling through Instagram, etc.

Then take note of those things and apply them to your closet. Strive to try something new everyday (speaking to your clothes here), take risks, and have fun. If it doesn’t work out, tomorrow is always a new day to try another new outfit!

  • Getting Some Color This Summer: A Red & Aqua Outfit Idea

Just doing my part to make the world a little colorful!

    Color Me Bad

My summer capsule wardrobe was packed with color but here’s one more outfit for good measure.

To be honest, both posts were planned and photographed at different times and I never intended for them to be so similar. But it is summer so I see colorful outfit inspiration as the more the merrier!

    Nautical By Nature

I normally avoid dressing nautical because I don’t even own a boat, but I was inspired by the red & aqua outfit I shared in this summer outfit round-up and it just so happened that my pieces gave off major sailor vibes!

Both the top and the skirt have been around in my closet for a long time so I’m surprised it took so long to think of this combination. Sometimes you just need that perfect hit of inspiration to make something happen!

    On Sail

I updated this outfit from the original inspo by decking myself out in red accessories like this red purse I thrifted that you’ll see in my June thrift haul video on Friday.

I also ‘tide’ up my top to stay true to my ’80s aesthetic. Couldn’t you see this bright look being an alternative Fourth of July outfit?! For shore!

    Sea What I Did There?

As much fun as I had wearing this outfit, I also had a blast going overboard with the puns for this post. Oh whale!

    Are you ready for it?

    The Lucky One

Saturday was one of those nights.. my friend invited me to Chicago to watch Taylor Swift perform on her Reputation tour and it was even better than my wildest dreams!

We had amazing seats, were gifted special light-up bracelets to wear that synced up to each song, caught a bunch of T-Swift branded confetti, were dazzled by fireworks, and got to literally dance in the rain with Taylor when it started pouring for the final four songs.ย I can’t help thinking that was how it ought to be.

I can easily say I’ll remember this concert for a long time to come! It also doesn’t hurt that I got lots of photos of the show + my outfit. Keep scrolling for the details!

I’m A Nightmare Dressed Like a Day Dream

Going to this concert has been on my mind since last fall so I had lots of time to search for the perfect outfit but wouldn’t you know it, I didn’t find this shiny dress on thredUP until just 2 weeks ago?! Talk about last minute!

But I think I made a good choice as I saw lots of other Swifties rockin’ the mermaid sequin look, including my friend that I went with. I did have to add a moto jacket (also from thredUP!) as we had oddly cool temps and then the random rain shower.

A highlight of the show for me was getting to see so many fans dressed in creative costumes and outfits. Everyone looked incredible!

That Classic Red Lip Thing That You Like

The stress of finding a dress doesn’t even compare to choosing the perfect red lip color. Ultimately I went with my trusty Ruby Woo by MAC as I’ve heard a rumor that Tay is also a fan of it.

    End Game

Overall the show was sweeter than fiction and I’d do it over and over again if I could. In fact, I’ll be doing something similar this Saturday, June 9th as I’ll be watching Pat Benatar (Love is a Battlefield!) perform this Saturdayย at the America’s River Festival in Dubuque, IA.

    Secondhand Sequins

I may not be able to predict the future but I was able to predict in my January thrift haul video that this blue sequin dress would be worn on my birthday.

The sticky sequin situation didn’t end up being much of a problem. Though I did have to wear tights instead of bare legs since the first day of spring brought us chilly weather instead of the sunshine I was expecting. I think wearing those actually helped the dress lay nicer!

    Delightful Details

This birthday girl crown from Girl Props has quickly become a tradition to wear in our family. I wore it for my birthday last year and lent it to my mom and sister when they celebrated their big days.

Then I played with contrasting by wearing a tough moto jacket to offset the sweetness of the dress and then I wore a red purse to (also) pop against the blue dress. I love some clever details and this outfit had it for me!

    A Piece of Cake!

Overall, my birthday went off without a hitch. There was lots of ice cream, pizza, and not a single sequin fell off my dress. I’d call that a good day!

    Roll Up Your Sleeves

This tip is much less a tip and more of a habit for me. I’m constantly rolling up my sleeves because I hate having my hands inhibited by fabric. (The only exception is when it’s cold.)

While the internet is aplenty with tutorials for rolling up your sleeve, the best idea I ever got was from a 1980s magazine. They suggested adding a rubberband around the cuff and then rolling up from there. It works especially well with bulky sweaters and cardigan materials!

hannah rupp the outfit repeater simple clothing hacks vintage thrifted punk edgy flair enamel pins

    Wear Flair With Abandon

Another quick fix for any outfit is adding a pin, brooch, or any kind of fun flair. I’ve covered this topic on my blog lots of time in the past but here’s just a few more placement ideas.

You could wear it a little off-center on your purse or, my favorite, attach some pins on your shoelaces.

The friendly burger, animal skull, and broken heart enamel pins came from flair extraordinaire Melanie who designs flair for her Etsy shop calledย Pteroble. I assure you these pins are anything but terrible and are actually quite awesome!

Customize the Backing of Your Flair

If you’re anything like me then you’re also afraid of losing your pins when wearing them in the real world!

To combat this, I’ve taken to adding clear earring backs to all my pins whether they’re straight back or a bar. That little extra grippy security gives me peace of mind!

    The Cool Girl Tuck

Where would fashion be without the “casual” t-shirt tuck?

And by casual, I mean it takes about 5 minutes to perfect but the end result is totally worth it!

hannah rupp the outfit repeater simple clothing hacks vintage thrifted punk edgy flair enamel pins

    Distinguish Your Tights

Do you ever get a pair of tights that have no tag and there’s no way of telling the back from the front? This is especially frustrating if you wear your tights a time or two before washing. Enter: this trick.

I take an ordinary needle and colorful string and thread it through a back seam, cut it, and add a knot. Don’t be intimated by a needle. This literally requires no sewing skills at all!

Just a sidenote that all my We Love Color tights that I wear so much include a branded tag and I cannot thank them enough for that!!

hannah rupp the outfit repeater simple clothing hacks vintage thrifted punk edgy flair enamel pins

    Clothing Curiosity

I’m often asked where I got my style or how I learned fashion things and it’s really just something I’ve picked up through the years. From magazines, the internet, friends, and blog posts like this one!

Always be curious, learn new things, and don’t be afraid to play in your closet. ๐Ÿ™‚

A girls night out can be a blur of excitement but here’s an outfit idea that will make it unforgettable!

    Play It Cool

I spent most of my early 20s staying in and avoiding a social life. But now that I’m nearing 27, I relish in getting dressed up and going out with friends!

It took me awhile to find my place in a small town as I don’t drink. I’ve now found out that I can still participate in pub trivia & karaoke nights, my local library has taken initiatives to host awesome adult only programs, and of course nothing beats playing board games with friends at their house!

For this girls night out outfit, I chose to focus on what I might wear hanging out at a bar. Hopefully this inspires your own going out outfit when it’s negative degrees outside!

Beyond The Jeans + Tee Formula

This outfit is for someone looking for something beyond the jeans + tee formula. If that’s your style, go for it!

But I find it more fun to get dressed up to go out if you’re normally the kind of person who stays home all the time. Putting on a dress + jacket helps trigger my brain into knowing I’m leaving the house and it’s not time to work. (Unless I’m working on having a good time. ๐Ÿ˜‰)

    Crushing It

My look started with this blue velvet dress that was gifted from eShakti last month. Nothing says crushing it like crushing it like wearing crushed velvet, right?

    It’s In The Details

I previously wore this dress for Christmas-y events so I wanted to find a way to make it edgier. A moto jacket from thredUP, thrifted oil slick purse, and these killerย booties were just the thing I needed.

You might also notice the shape of this dress is different than it previously was. I simply used a belt at my waistline and then pulled some of the fabric up to creator a shorter hemline. It’s like instantly getting a new dress!

Now that you’ve seen my outfit, can one of my friends invite me out so I can wear it? LOL

Sequins are great to wear for New Years Eve so you can reflect on the year. This is how I styled a sequin dress for the big night and beyond!

    Wearing Sequins to Celebrate

    Happy new year, friends!

I kicked off my festivities in this sequined number that I bought from the online secondhand retailer Swap.com. Layered with a black turtleneck, black We Love Colors tights, and comfy heels, this outfit served me well as I played board games and sipped from a disco ball shaped tumbler.

As I’m not one to let my fancy clothes collect dust in the back of my closet, scroll down to see how (& why!) I plan to rewear this dress for daytime events.

    Wearing Sequins for Everyday

Besides the obvious of not wanting my clothes to go unworn (I love all my clothes!), there are a few other benefits to rewearing sequins for everyday. One is that is just makes the day more fun! Every outing feels a little fancier because you’re shining like the star you are.ย ๐ŸŒŸ

More specifically to this dress, I wore it for New Years Eve so it holds memories of that night and the optimism that I had going into the new year. While that optimism fades with time as the year unveils some crappy traits, I’d like to think that wearing this dress in the future will remind me of that hope & positive life I wished for myself.

I wore it with a white tee underneath, a cool looking moto jacket on top, and jeans to make it extra casual. I’m ready to rock in the new year!

    Beyond Sequins

I hope that you also carry a little bit of that confidence from your celebrations into this year. Life’s not all rainbows and sunshine but we can make it sequins and sparkly jewelry if that’s what we choose to wear! When you dress good, you feel good.

This outfit puts a little prep in my step!

The Benefit of Thrifting Your Clothes

One of my favorite reasons for thrifting my clothes is that it allows me to try out different styles on the cheap. I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t own half of my closet had I bought it full price because I would be afraid of trying something new and then never wearing it.

Now, I’m not saying I wouldn’t have thrifted this black & white polka dot sweater but I definitely would have thought twice because of it’s preppy vibes. Read on to get insight into how I wear a style that’s outside my norm!

    Style Chameleon

For the most part I never try to pigeon hole myself into one particular style but there are some that I’m not fond of like preppy. What about it screams “Hannah Rupp?!”

So automatically this sweater presented a challenge and I was ready to face it!

    Dressing Outside The Box

Instead of giving in and dressing like a scholar, I added a bunch of 1980s elements (thatย are my personal style) to bring a lot of myself into this look.

Colored pants, a jacket full of flair, and a leopard print purse keep this look from being anything but boring!

    Your Style Challenge

I know it’s tough when you buy something and then you’re not quite sure how to make it work. I’d highly recommend a big Pinterest or Google inspiration sesh where you can find other fashionistas rocking similar pieces. (I love the way this girl is rocking a polka dot top too. Maybe I’ll try something like that next time!)

But, more importantly, just play in your closet. Fashion is fun! If you don’t like your outfit, there’s always another day to come up with an even better ensemble!
