  • I Tried A Mystery Rock and Roll T-shirt Box & Was Honestly Surprised

    [su_note note_color=”#FFFFFF” text_color=”#000000″ radius=”9″ class=””]

This post is sponsored by Thrift Vintage Fashion. All opinions expressed are my own honest thoughts. Everything else is 100% me.

    *Drumroll, please….*

(that joke will make sense in a minute)

One company is making it their mission to save as many discarded duds as possible and I’m excited to be partnering with them for this post!

Thrift Vintage Fashion is a family-owned vintage wholesaler that provides products in bulk to resellers around the globe, hosts in-person flea markets, and runs an outlet store at its home base of Miami, Florida.

In addition to rescuing clothes from landfills, they also provide mystery boxes for fashionistas, like me, who like to thrift online from the comfort of home.

They reached out and offered to send me something in exchange for this post so I pursued their wide variety of mystery boxes and settled on the Rock & Music t-shirt box. The Rock & Music Mystery T-Shirt Box starts at $55 for 3 t-shirts and is available in sizes S-2XL.

It arrived very quickly and I was very impressed by what I received! If you want to see what I got inside, then let’s rock and roll!

Why Choose A Mystery Box From Thrift Vintage Fashion?

I’ve tried many mystery boxes and subscription services over the years. I think the biggest allure is that you never know what it’s inside!

If you’re a fan of surprises, this sort of mystery mail probably appeals to you, too.

I appreciate that Thrift Vintage Fashion has a sustainable approach to a mystery box and is helping to salvage secondhand clothes and keep fashion circular. What they do is good for the environment, is helpful to resellers, and is fun for ordinary shoppers like me.

    What’s not to love?!

What I Got In My Mystery Box From Thrift Vintage Fashion

Every mystery box is picked at random by their in-house Thrift Experts. I would say this box totally delivered on its promise of Rock and Music t-shirts!

First up is a classic Rolling Stones t-shirt. It’s made of a very soft, worn-in gray fabric with the iconic red mouth logo.

The second shirt I unboxed is a black tee with the logo for the ska punk band, Sublime. It was very unexpected! And while the graphic is a bit heavier than I normally wear, I’m excited to wear it, nonetheless. It’s good to try new things!

And the last tee pulled from the box is this white top with a brightly colored image that references the anniversary of Woodstock.

In a sea of band t-shirts that are normally black, white, and gray; it was refreshing to find one with such pretty colors!

Would I Re-Order A Mystery Box From Thrift Vintage Fashion?

Thank you to Thrift Vintage Fashion for the awesome mystery box! I had fun anticipating what would be inside and look forward to styling everything for future outfit posts on my blog. (P.S. please send outfit ideas!)

I would consider ordering a mystery box again in the future—probably from a different genre—as it’s a cool way to shake up your style.

The price is a little steep for me to do that on a regular basis but I think it’d be OK to do it every once in a while!

Have you shopped from Thrift Vintage Fashion before? What do you think of a mystery box of secondhand clothing? Would you buy one?

A thredUP Summer Thrift Haul | What I'm Keeping + Returning | www.theoutfitrepeater.comA thredUP Summer Thrift Haul

My 3 favorite words? Add to cart.

It’s been a while since my last thredUP thrift haul but I had an overflowing list of favorites and finally hit the BUY button on my cart.

As usual, there are some hits and misses. But that tends to happen when you’re buying secondhand clothes from the internet, right?

Let’s take a look at the good, the bad, and the WTF!

    Black Lace Kimono

I’ve had a black lace kimono on my thrifting wishlist for a couple of years now and finally found one in my price range.

This was a great fit and I love the way it looks with my tie-dye pants I just bought from Envy Bootique!

hannah is standing in front of a pink background. she's wearing a black cami, black lace kimono, black and white tie dye pants and black platform sandals.

    Flared Jeans

I’ve been looking at these flared jeans for months and figured it wouldn’t hurt to buy them + try them.

As it turns out, the measurements weren’t accurate (story of my life) and the rise was a couple of inches shorter than I need. The fit was actually pretty good otherwise. But I already have other jeans that ARE the right rise, so no need to keep something I’ll fuss with and never wear.

hannah is smiling in front of a pink background. she's wearing a blue boho blouse, high waisted flared denim, and brown platform shoes.

    Two Summer Hats

I don’t buy hats often but I normally love the way I look in them. (I wear a lot with my Maurices try-ons!) but these two just didn’t sit right with me, both literally and figuratively.

The patterned hat was fun but the brim swallowed my face. The straw hat was completely shapeless and floppy. I’d really prefer one with structure.

    So both hats got returned!

    Pink Striped Oversized Cardigan

I’m already thinking ahead to cardigan szn and could picture this one being a fun throw-and-go piece. What I didn’t anticipate was how oversized it would be.

It was NOT returnable to thredUP so I will be keeping it! I tried shrinking it in the wash but it didn’t budge. Of all things that have shrunk on me, why not this?! lol

hannah is smiling in front of a pink background. she's wearing a pink minnie mouse tee, oversized pink striped cardigan, high waisted jeans, and pink ballet flat shoes.

    Colorful Cover-Up

You literally can’t go wrong with a cover-up or kimono. They’re my favorite way to layer in the summer! This one was a big YES!

hannah is wearing a long colorful kimono, white jeans, and white platform sandals. she's smiling in front of a pink background.

    Longsleeve Layering Shirt

I’ve been hunting for second skin shirts for a long time and lucked out finding this green and pink tie-dye version. It’s exactly what I want for layering in the fall and winter!

hannah is giving a peace sign in front of a pink background. she's wearing a multicolor long sleeve shirt under a black slip dress, and black doc marten boots.

    Sheer Pink Polka Dot Blouse

My last haul item is this sheer pink polka dot blouse with puffed sleeves. I felt like taking a risk and that risk has paid off!

This is another piece that I’m dreaming up ways to layer with. If you have any outfit suggestions, please let me know!

hannah is smiling in front of a pink background. she's wearing a pink polka dotted blouse, silver pleated skirt, and silver high heels. she's holding a blue bejeweled clutch.

    In Clothes-ing

Overall, I would say this was a successful thrift haul! If you’d like to try thredUP for yourself, you can use my code and save 40% on your first purchase. I’ll get store credit in exchange (which I’ll use on a future thrift haul) so it’s a win-win for both of us!

Please be sure to Pin your favorite outfit, too!

  • What I Bought From thredUP + An Important Update On Their Return Policy

What I Bought From thredUP + An Important Update On Their Return PolicyWhat I Bought From ThredUp

Thrifting online can be very hit or miss, even when you’re well experienced on a platform and carefully research an item before hitting buy.

One platform I use over and over again is ThredUp. ThredUp is an online consignment store that carries women’s clothes, shoes, and accessories.

My most recent ThredUp purchase had 3 things. All of them were from my thrifting wishlist but all had a slightly different outcome.

Here’s what I bought from ThredUp, what I’m keeping, and what I’ll be returning!

What I’m Returning From My ThredUp Haul

My first thrifting wishlist item was this pink and orange polka dot maxi dress.

I’ve seen it many times on the ThredUp site but it always gets away from me.

I was finally able to snag it and give it a try. Turns out, it was for the best that I didn’t own it sooner because I didn’t end up loving it.

While the colors and polka dot pattern are very ME – I was instantly annoyed with the sleeves riding up. And is anyone else getting Mormon vibes from the cut? I just wasn’t feeling it at all.

hannah is smiling and wearing a pink and orange polka dot floor length maxi dress from thredup

My second ThredUp find that I’ll be returning are these peachy high-waisted gaucho pants.

They aren’t too bad at first glance. But the pair I have on my thrifting wishlist are either white or tan colored – not the same color as my skin tone. (Sometimes it’s hard to judge a color from a photo online. You live and you learn!)

I was also hoping for something a bit higher-waisted. And I was surprised they had no pockets! No pockets are a no-go for me!

hannah is smiling wear a brown striped crop top and peach wide leg capri pants from thredup

What I’m Keeping From My ThredUp Haul

When all else fails, a cute purse (or backpack, in my case!) is always a one-size-fits-all solution.

This yellow Baggu backpack has been on my thrifting wishlist. The color is even more vibrant in person!

I like to carry backpacks for days full of long errands and I think this one will be perfect for that!

hannah is smiling and wearing a blue maxi dress and has a yellow baggu backpack slung on her shoulder from thredup

An Update On The ThredUp Return Policy – As of May 2023

ThredUp has made yet another update!

In the past, making a return on ThredUp was pretty straightforward. If you had something to return, they would give you a label to print and give you a refund to your original form of payment. There was also a small relisting fee they took out.

With the new ThredUp return policy update, if you return an item, you’re given the option of getting an IMMEDIATE ThredUp shopping credit (slightly less than what you paid)  and you can KEEP the item. Seems like a great deal, however, the shopping credit will expire in 14 days.screenshot of thredup app and new return policy that lets you keep your reutrn in exchange for store credit

So if you have a constant rotation of ThredUp orders showing up on our doorstep – and don’t mind losing a few dollars – the new return policy might be perfect for you!

I imagine they added this option to cut back on so many returns. And how many times have you ALMOST loved an item and thought about making it work but sent it back instead? This would give your item a second chance and a little extra credit in your pocket.

My return choice for this order was to completely return all the items and have it go back to my original form of payment.

    ///

If you found this post helpful, be sure to bookmark it or Pin it for later. Let me know what your latest ThredUp find was and what you think of this new return policy!

  • Thrifting 101: How To Thrift a Wardrobe From Scratch

Thrifting 101: How To Thrift a Wardrobe From Scratch | www.theoutfitrepeater.com

How To Build a Wardrobe From Thrifted Clothes

Thrifting for clothes can be overwhelming!

If it’s not something you usually shop for, where do you even start? How do you know what to pick and how can you judge the quality of a piece or what a good value is?

A blog reader asked me what would I do if I had to start my wardrobe over my scratch. What would that look like in a thrift store setting?

So in this post, I’m going to cover what I think are wardrobe essentials, where the best places are to find thrifted clothes, and how to easily evaluate if a piece of clothing will be a long-lasting item worth being in your closet!

    What Clothes Should You Thrift?

If I was starting my closet over again with the bare minimum, I would focus on a few key pieces to clothe me while I built my perfect wardrobe:

    • A comfy pair of pants
    • A dress that’s versatile for any occasion
    • A well-fitted shirt
    • A denim jacket

You might need different pieces depending on your lifestyle (maybe a blazer or jeans are more necessary for you!) and of course, the colors, prints, and styles will be different for all of us.

But that’s the fun of thrifting! You’re not tied down to only one style of clothing when you walk into the store. There is so much variety to choose from!

colorful clothes hanging up in a thrift store

Where Should You Thrift Your Clothes?

After coming up with your list of clothes you need, it’s time to figure out which stores will suit your needs.

If your style skews retro, maybe an antique store or curated vintage shop would be more appropriate.

If you’re plus-size, seek out a specialty store in your area.

    [su_note note_color=”#FFFFFF” text_color=”#000000″ radius=”9″ class=””]

DISCOVER NEW-TO-YOU SECONDHAND STORES ON MY THRIFT STORE MAP!

    [/su_note]

If you don’t have a lot of time to search, consider a consignment store that’s well-sorted.

And if your type doesn’t fall under any particular category, then scope out any local thrift store.

How To Quickly Assess Your Thrifted Clothes For Fit & Quality

Now comes the fun part – shopping!

When walking down the aisles of a thrift store, you can make your selections two ways:

    • Scan the clothing racks with your eyes. Looks for interesting details that catch your attention!
    • Flip through the clothing one at a time, feeling each piece as you pass it by.

a pile of colorful sweaters in a bin at a thrift store

There is no right or wrong way to thrift, only the way that works best for you and your time.

Next up is filling your cart (or arms) with your finds. When you’ve got a decent selection to go through, you can find a quiet spot in the store or a fitting room and evaluate each piece. Here are a few questions you might want to ask yourself:

    • Are there any holes or stains?
    • If so, are they something I can feasibly fix or clean?
    • What is the material of the fabric? Things like polyester are typically cheaply made and will pill quickly. If you want quality in your closet, look for things like cotton, tencel, or linen.
    • What are the care instructions? Is something dry clean only and you don’t go to dry cleaners? Skip it!

colorful pants on hangers hanging up in a thrift store fitting room a clothing care tag on a thrifted garment

If you have access to a fitting room, here are some questions to ask yourself when trying a piece on:

    • Does it fit? (If you’re not in a fitting room, have a measuring tape or piece of string on hand to gauge the true size!)
    • Is it comfortable?
    • Can you reach your hands over your head without the garment riding up or down?
    • Can you sit down without the material shifting around?
    • Can you bend over without flashing certain body parts?
    • Are you already fussing with pulling it down or a strap sliding around? (It will only get worse when you wear it full-time!)

This is not always a perfect guide and sometimes you will buy things that seemed great in the fitting room and then show their true colors once you wear them out and about. Don’t feel bad! It happens to the best of us!

Hannah is smiling a thrift store fitting room holding a pile of colorful clothes. she's wearing a long pink jacket, denim overalls, and a yellow purse.

What To Do With Your New Thrifted Clothes

When you get home with your goods, it’s important to wash everything before you wear them.

Even if something smells freshly laundered, it’s spent days/weeks/months in a bag or box, been placed in a donation bin, been touched by many hands to get to the sales floor, and then touched or tried on by other customers before you.

That’s a lot of unknown contamination!

Hannah is standing in a thrift store, in front of a clothing rack. She's holding up a brightly colored beaded mini skirt and shrugging.

Follow all the care instructions on your new piece to help it last as long as possible. And if anything needs to be mended, get to it right away before you forget.

    Starting Over

Thrifting a closet full of clothes that you love and that express your personal style is not built overnight. Despite what you see on social media – or even here on my blog – it’s taken us years to find pieces that work together to create cool outfits.

If you’re feeling discouraged because you’re not finding items during your first few thrift outings, just hang in there! There is no rule that says you have to buy something every time you go to a thrift store.

And what’s the rush in building your wardrobe? If you want long-lasting, high-quality pieces that you’ll love for the rest of your life, there really is no rush to find everything right now!

Just take your time, go to another thrift store, and keep trying!

  • Uh Oh! ThredUp Just Made BIG Changes To Their Clean Out Kit Service

    [su_note note_color=”#FFFFFF” text_color=”#000000″ radius=”9″ class=””]

This post contains affiliate links & I may receive a commission if you click or complete a purchase through them.

    [/su_note]

an oversized thredUP Clean Out Kit bag against a pink background

An Overview Of The ThredUp Clean Out Kit Service

Passing your clothes off to someone else to sell sounds like a dream! But in reality, it can be quite a hassle with very little payoff.

I’ve previously written a full review about my experience with the ThredUp Clean Out Kit service before and have even since sent in more bags of clothes. The payouts are never anything to write home about and I’m afraid they’re about to get worse from here on out.

ThredUp is modifying the program and making it more difficult for regular folks to flip their discarded duds.

So what’s changed since my last review in 2018? Read on to learn more about what’s going on with the ThredUp Clean Out Kit service!

What Is The thredUP Clean Out Kit Service?

On the surface, using the ThredUp Clean Out Kit service seems like an ideal situation. You have clothes you want to get rid of and they’re offering to help take care of them in a responsible way via reselling or recycling.

But like all good things, there are some catches.

    • Ordering a big bag, as seen in this post, is $2.99. However, you can print your own shipping label at home for free and send in your donation using any bag or box you have around.

    • For items ThredUp doesn’t list, they can be responsibly reused or recycled for free. Or the items can be returned to you for a $10.99 fee. (There is another fee for a listing that doesn’t sell that you want back – see the next section to learn about that!)

    • On average, only 50% of items sent in qualify to be listed.

    • Once accepted, you can adjust your listing price to change your payout. This is basically like getting to set your own price for an item if you feel like ThredUp didn’t price it fairly.

    • You get paid out on each sold item once the 14-day return window has passed. If your items sell slowly, one at a time, you get potentially be getting payouts at random times throughout the 30 or 45-day consignment window.

A $14.99 service fee will be deducted from your total earnings. I had to make this bold because this is a BIG deal! If you think this service is free, think again!

    • Cashouts are given using Stripe (straight to a bank account) OR your PayPal OR can be donated to a charitable partner of ThredUp’s choosing, which is currently the Susan G. Komen foundation (aka a charity infamous for pinkwashing. hmmm….).

Updates To The ThredUp Clean Out Kit Service (As of 2023)

ThredUp recently made changes to their Clean Out Kit service. So what do those changes mean for us?

    • The ThredUp processing time is now about 7 weeks, which means after sending in your kit, you’ll be waiting almost 2 months to be notified if your items were chosen or not. If you’re trying to flip your items for quick cash, it’s going to take a while!

UPDATE 6/23 – Summer kits are being handled with a FREE “Rush processing” in 2 weeks

    • Once your item has been accepted, there is a limited price adjustment to a maximum of 10% of the listing price. If the item isn’t high value in the first place, you’re really not going to make much at all.

Tips & Best Practices For Using The ThredUp Clean Out Kit Service

I don’t want to discourage anyone from using this service as I still believe there are some benefits, as long as you navigate it strategically and keep your expectations low. Before sending in your donations, take this advice into consideration for a smoother experience!

    • Carefully follow the current selling guide on ThredUp and only send in those items. You don’t want to lose out on any valuable pieces because you sent them during the wrong season!

    • Use their Payout Calculator to determine if it’s worth sending your pieces in at all.

    • To get the maximum payout without paying in, opt for a free shipping label and choose to have your items donated if unsold.

    • Going back to my first point, make sure your items are in clean, current, and wearable condition for the best chance of being chosen.

PRO TIP: Many people do not send in designer items or NWT pieces. Send them or resell them elsewhere for a more fair payout. Stick with mid-priced brands from the ThredUp selling guide for a reasonable payout.

My Final Thoughts About The ThredUp Clean Out Kit Service

Using the ThredUp Clean Out Kit Service will by no means make you rich. If that’s what you’re hoping for, just skip this program.

In my experience, I sell an average of 7 pieces with a median $15 total payout per bag that I send in. (And with all these fee changes, I’d be making nothing!)

With the updates I’ve outlined in this post, I think your best bet is NOT to cash out but rather use the funds as store credit on the ThredUp website.

I’m both a ThredUp partner and a secondhand fan and use lots of earned ThredUp credit every month to buy cool stuff!

My bottom line is, if you have the time and means to sell items yourself, do it. If you don’t have the time and means, give this program a try or donate the items to a local organization.

A Thrifted Gift From Assistance League Online Thrift Shop

Out with the old and in with the… old? My Spring closet refresh is off to a thrifty start!

I got a surprise package from the Assistance League of Georgetown Area. One of their employees is also a blog follower and they saw my recent collaboration with Assistance League Online Thrift Shop and wanted to send along a birthday gift! I was very flattered by the gesture!

There are actually two items in the package but I just styled the first one for this post. It’s an amazing multi-patterned blouse with statement sleeves from the brand Umgee. I saw it online and was captivated by the floral print. I feel lucky that it’s mine now!

Hannah is white female standing in front of a pink background. Her curly hair is pulled into a bun. She's wearing a floral blouse, brown faux fur vest, light wash flared jeans, and tan booties. How I Styled a Statement Blouse and Flared Denim

This statement-making floral blouse feels very romantic and bohemian. I knew right away that I wanted to wear it with flared jeans but I didn’t have any in my closet.

As chance would have it, the clothing store I work at, Maurices, carries a line of denim called Kancan. Kancan is known for some fashion-forward (and very comfy!) jeans. I’ve never owned a pair before but an opportunity recently came up for associates to get a pair at a deep discount. How could I say no?!

As soon as I saw the Kancan Super Flare High Rise jeans online, I knew they were the ones. I had already done a big try-on in-store of our available Kancans to figure out my size. So I was fortunate to order my perfect size on the first try!

These jeans + this blouse makes me feel like the flower child I never knew I was!

    How My Kancan Jeans Fit

As I mentioned above, I tried on a bunch of Kancan jeans at Maurices to figure out my true size. I ended up getting a size 28, which corresponds to a womens size 8. There is a lot of stretch so they’re very comfortable, too.

If you’re not familiar with the brand, I highly recommend you do the same to figure out your fit. Maurices carries Kancan in sizes 23-33 and for plus sizes 14w-24w. Additionally, you can always order different inseams online, which is SO helpful.

  • Jeans I Thrifted + 3 Ways I’m Styling Them

3 ways Hannah Rupp styled a pair of thrifted Levi jeansThrifting a Pair of Jeans

One thing I hear over and over from my internet community is the painful process of trying to thrift jeans. (This goes for in-person and online.) I feel ya!

So what do you do when you try on a pair of jeans at a thrift store and they fit you perfectly? Buy them without a second thought and style them immediately. Oh, and, don’t forget to do a happy dance in the dressing room!

I recently struck gold by finding a pair of gray Levi high-waisted jeans at the thrift store. With or without an available dressing room, I always carry a retractable measuring tape with me to help me find the perfect fit and save me the trouble of trying on my finds.

I held it up to pair after pair with no luck.

Then these Levi’s matched all my measurements so I threw them in my cart to try on. To not much of a surprise, they were the perfect fit. And they’ve got just enough stretch in them to make them comfy, too!

The price tag was a lot higher than I normally pay – $11 – but I rarely find jeans that fit and are something that will fill a gap in my closet so I bit the bullet and bought them. So far, no regrets!

How I Styled My Thrifted Jeans

These thrifted jeans are a good, neutral counterpart to my rainbow wardrobe. I’m in need of darker colors to anchor my outfits so I had fun playing around in my closet and coming up with combinations. Here’s how I styled my thrifted jeans!

Styling My Thrifted Jeans With a Sweatshirt

The fit of these thrifted jeans can be casual so I leaned into that with my first look. It’s a thrifted sweatshirt that I cropped myself, a pair of old sneakers, and a simple necklace.

I could take this even further with a plaid around my waist or a denim jacket. It’s a great throw-and-go look!

hannah rupp is similar wearing a green cropped sweatshirt and high waisted thrifted jeans

Styling My Thrifted Jeans With a Moto Jacket

I am really digging the second way I styled my thrifted jeans. As soon as I saw them, I knew they were meant to be worn with a moto jacket.

This look feels so cool! Plus I could style a plethora of different tops and tees under the moto jacket to change the look ever so slightly. I added the beret and red lipstick to give it a feminine edge.

hannah rupp is smiling wearing a red beret and red lipstick. she has on a black graphic tee, moto jacket, and thrifted high waisted Levi jeans.

Styling My Thrifted Jeans With an Oversized Vintage Blazer

My last look was inspired by a similar ‘fit I wore many years ago that involved flared jeans, a graphic tee, and this oversized vintage blazer. I recreated (or outfit repeated!) the whole thing but swapped out the flared jeans for these new thrifted Levi jeans.

I am obsessed with the look!

    Tips For Thrifting Jeans

If you’re trying to thrift a pair of jeans and could use some help/encouragement, remember to:

    • Carry a measuring tape and check every pair that catches your eye
    • Thrift outside of your usual size, go up and down at least 2 sizes, if possible
    • Pay attention to the care tag/fabric content. Spandex will give you more wiggle room with the size!
    • Wear a dress, skirt, or biker shorts when thrifting so you can try jeans on over your clothes if a fitting room isn’t available
    • Be patient! 🙂

My Best thredUP Finds of 2022

Over the past year, thredUP has continued to help me curate a colorful closet by being able to shop for secondhand clothes online. I have a partnership with them but am a lifelong customer regardless!

I’ve shared many thredUP hauls in 2022 on here where I was honest about the hits and misses.

This post is a big round-up of everything I kept, how I styled it, and what it’s been up to in my closet since I first bought it. Let’s get started!

    The Best Coats From thredUP

I live in the Midwest so having a range of stylish but functional coats to choose from to keep up with the weather is important to me. I feel so lucky to add these bright coat options to my wardrobe!

I almost anticipate rain so I have a chance to wear my yellow or pink raincoat. They both get pretty equal wear on wet days!

    The Best Accessories From thredUP

I love using Saved Searches on thredUP to find items I don’t normally spot in B&M thrift stores. One example is Baggu totes and purses! I’ve been fortunate enough to find and snag a few over the years, including this black and white patterned one that reminds me of a notebook.

The other accessory I stalk is hats. This bucket hat was on repeat for me ALL summer! And this red beret is such a fab Winter staple.

The Best Dresses & Jumpsuits From thredUP

I set out on a mission this year to find a fun but gothic dress to wear to my brother’s Fall wedding and I found exactly what I was hoping for with time to spare! I haven’t re-worn this dress yet but I hope to find just the right occasion soon.

The other dress & jumpsuit were “just for fun” finds but get a lot of wear on a regular basis because they’re so comfortable and easy to wear!

The Best Cozy Pieces From thredUP

Speaking of comfortable and easy to wear… my loungewear collection is growing thanks to thredUP!

As I’ve been focusing on color and higher quality fabrics for myself, I’m able to be very selective with my choices on thredUP and find exactly what I’m looking for.

No doubt I’ve worn all 3 of these things together at the same time. It’s a cute fit!

  • Clothing Labels I LOVE From The 1980s & 1990s

a pink rug has a pile of vintage clothes tumbled on it. also included are vintage clothing labels, a shopping bag, and a pink plastic totes from the 1980s.

    Clothing Labels of the 1980s & 1990s

Thrifters love clothing labels for many different reasons. Some look for brands with quality, others with a high resale value and people like me just like finding funny brand names or learning more about fashion history.

There are a number of vintage clothing labels from the 1980s and 1990s that I’m always excited to spot at the thrift store. They evoke a certain nostalgia in me and the label designs are usually pretty rad.

Let’s look back at some of my favorites, why I love them, and what to look for if you’re trying to pick up this genre of clothing!

    My Favorite ’80s & ’90s Clothing Brands

It’s hard to say which came first – my love of thrifting or my love for fashion. It’s a tie! But thrifting introduced me to so many different styles, silhouettes, and most importantly, brands!

The following brands became my favorite from repeated sightings at the thrift. I liked what I kept seeing and, eventually, I came to know a lot about the brands just from the clothes I was finding. Many of those pieces now live in my closet and are well-loved and well-worn here on this blog!

      • Bonjour
      • Contempo Casual
      • espirit
      • Gitano
      • Lee denim
      • Members Only

Honorable Mentions: More ’80s & ’90s Clothing Brands I Love

There are a lot of vintage brands I’ve gotten to know from my years of thrifting but don’t see as often or don’t have much of in my closet. Regardless, they’re always fun to find in the wild or research in old books or fashion magazines. (Or even trying to spot in old movies!)

    • All That Jazz
    • Anxiety
    • Avon Fashions
    • Benneton
    • dELiA*s
    • Forenza
    • Gadzooks
    • Paris Sports Club
    • Taurus II

    Tips For Thrifting ’80s & ’90s Clothing

Thrifting true vintage clothing can be very hit-and-miss and really comes down to where you’re thrifting, the type of store you’re at, and who donates there.

To find brands like the ones on this list, keep these tips in mind:

    • Where: Big cities and college towns are usually populated with broke students and young professionals. To find vintage items, get into the burbs!
    • What: Aw, chain stores vs. independent shops. Many chain stores like Goodwill or Salvation Army tend to have more current donations or even surplus inventory from retailers like Target. That means to find true vintage, you’ll want to dig a little deeper at independent shops, antique malls, or curated vintage clothing stores.
    • Who: Vintage is more likely to come from folks who lived through the decades you want so keep in mind where that age range might settle. Again, they’re likely not living or donating in bigger cities but spread throughout the burbs and small towns.
    • When: In the spring and summer months, consider estate sales where older residents might have an entire closet of vintage garbs up for grab! That’s a great way of finding an entire collection with similar labels.

TIP: Use my Thrift Store Map to find handpicked places in the Midwest to help you on your search!
