Thrifting Is Gross: And Other Dumb Thrift Store Myths You Still Believe

Thrifting Is Gross: And Other Dumb Thrift Store Myths You Still Believe

Let’s talk about thrifting! I love the thrill of the hunt and snagging a good deal. What I don’t like about it so much? How gross thrift stores are.

Chances are if you’re reading this, you’ve been in one or two that made you question the life choices that led up to going inside. They’re riddled with dust and an unidentified odor. They’re packed with people and crowded with merch.

But despite the gross factor of some thrift stores, I still think thrifting is awesome. Before you write off thrifting forever because of one bad experience, I want to help clear up some myths surrounding my favorite hobby. And hey, maybe by the end of this post, you’ll think thrifting is awesome too?

You can watch this post as a video or keep scrolling to read all about it:

Thrifting is gross…

Yeah, it is. But just as there are gross thrift stores out there, there are also some really well kept thrift stores. That’s the same with any shopping space! One Target might be out of order but another might be nice and tidy. You shouldn’t judge all thrift stores for the sins one. Keep trying until you find one you like!

Thrifting is for poor people..

False! I think thrifting is for all people. While thrifting does have more benefits for people in the lower money bracket; thrifting is just shopping at it’s core and if you like shopping for unique items, then I’d say it’s for you!

Thrifting is stupid… I never find anything good!

I usually hear this from my friends who go thrifting once a year. Of course you’re not gonna uncover any treasures if you only go once!

It’s also worth noting that trying to search for “good” things at a thrift stores defeats the purpose. Everything is donated and used to some extent. Instead of searching for good things, search for useful things. And please, go more than once a year.

Thrifting is crowded..

It sure is! A way to remedy this is to try going to the store at a different day/time. If you find that it’s perpetually busy, why not just skip it?

A trick I’ve found is that if you Google a store location, there’s a handy flow chart that lays out the day-to-day traffic and you can use that to your benefit! I’m not sure if all stores on Google will have a chart, but it’s worth a try to research your store before you go.

Thrifting is overwhelming..

It sure is! But wouldn’t any place feel that way if you’ve never been there? I feel lost when I enter a grocery store!

If the thought of some stores gives you the creeps, try to make a plan before you go in. Write down exactly what you’re looking for and only go in looking for that one item. I wouldn’t suggest that one item be clothes because that’s a load of work no matter what store you’re in!

The whole trip will feel more do-able if you make a plan and stick with it.

So, did I sell you on the idea of thrifting or do you still think it’s gross? I’d love to know what you’re thinking in the comments!

Luckily, thrifting is something you don’t have to love or even do in life. And I think that us thrifters would agree that it’s ok if you don’t go because then there’s more good stuff for the rest of us. 🙂

I loved this video so much! Thank you for standing up to the thrifting stereotypes that are kinda true but deal-able. ;D

I’m so glad thrifting is in style now! When I was a teenager, it was definitely something “poor people” did and if you shopped secondhand, you DID NOT brag about it!

I gotta get back intro thrifting!! I used to go a lot with my mom when I still lived there – we had so many thrift stores around our small town! But now the area I live in isn’t close to many. Ugh. That shouldn’t stop me!!!!! 😉

Great post! When I was in Paris this past week the only clothing stores I shopped at were thrift stores! They had the best selection of vintage pieces. I love how you can find things that are unique!
