My Smile Story

On December 1, 2016, I started a journey to transform my smile using invisible aligners provided by Smile Direct Club.

It’s now been a little over 3 months since I wore my last tray and I am ecstatic by the results.

But it’s been a long, twisted road to get here and the last time I told you anything about my treatment was last August (yikes!) so we have a lot of catching up to do. Let’s get to it!

What Is Smile Direct Club?

Before I get ahead of myself, I just want to briefly explain what the heck Smile Direct Club even is!

Smile Direct Club is a service that provides invisible teeth aligners directly to your house that you use to correct your smile. Braces at home! Genius!

They work with licensed dentists & orthodontists to provide you with a professional treatment plan to reach your desired smile goals. Most patients take less than 9 months to complete their treatment. However, I was a different story…

Brace Yourself

Growing up, my teeth were always just a little different. Not terribly crooked but, as one dentist put it, it looked like I had been punched in the face. Instead of lining up in a half circle, they were more of a crooked crescent moon shape.

I wanted braces so badly but it just wasn’t in our families budget so I accepted my smile as-is and embraced it for it’s uniqueness.

Fast forward to being 25 years old, I got an e-mail from a blogging network that said Smile Direct Club wanted to sponsor my treatment and get me the smile I desired. This was (and is) a huge blessing that I will forever be grateful for.

I started taking impressions (a mold of teeth) in August of 2016 and had to re-do them at least 3 times. The third time was a charm and I officially was accepted into the program and started wearing my aligners on December 1, 2016 with a projected end date of August 2017. You might remember I had a lisp for the first couple months as I adjusted to them but luckily that went away with practice.

Tooth Tales

My treatment continued as planned until March of 2017 when I had an emergency dental situation involving two new crowns on my back molars. Despite not being able to advanced my trays for 2 months, this really only set me back about a month.

In August of 2017, my projected end date, I didn’t feel like my smile was where it should be. My bite was a mess. My teeth looked great but I couldn’t comfortably bite my teeth together. I emailed Smile Direct Club and they were very understanding and agreed to take more impressions, view photos of my current smile, and see what they could do to help.

This resulted in them kindly extending my treatment an extra two months to make sure my bite was correct.

I cannot reiterate enough how helpful they were whenever I contacted them with questions – which was frequently! I felt very comfortable talking to them about any problems that arose and trusted their opinions.

Miles of Smiles

December 2017 came and went and.. I had another emergency dental situation pop up. This time it was a root canal in one of those fresh molars! Oy vey!

That, again, set me back and I had to wait longer than expected to finish my treatment because of my mouth healing, etc.

Finally, in March 2018, I put in my very last tray. And then a couple weeks later my retainer arrived in the mail and that’s what I’ve been wearing since then!

This has been a roller coaster of feelings but, at the end of the day, I have a perfect smile that I got from the comfort of home without anyone knowing I had braces. All those bumps in the road just make me that much more appreciative of what I have now and THAT makes me smile!

Read My Lips

I find that I no longer tilt my head to “cheat” the angle of my teeth, I smile bigger & more often when I’m in social situations, and I just generally feel more confident about my appearance.

I’ve always believed that a smile is your best accessory and now mine has a major upgrade!
